A rare picture for the Rohingya: two men who helped create the Mayu Border District and secured the official – as opposed to historical – recognition of the Rohingya by both the Ministry of Defence and the Cabinet.
If I were to speculate here is Gen. Ne Win’s deputy chief of staff Brigadier Aung Gyi was inspecting the Territorial Troops under the command of Colonel Saw Myint. In those days, the entire Tatmadaw had less than 10 Brigadiers. Even one of the Thirty Comrades – Bo Kyaw Zaw was a brigadier.
Both men were intimately involved in securing the Mujahideens’ surrender in July 1961, under U Nu’s Pyidaungsu Government (post-Caretaker Gov. of Ne Win).
Colonel Saw Myint was later made in charge of Mayu Border District.
